Highways England ignores MPs' Stonehenge fears

Highways England has kicked off the search for a main contractor to build the £1.7bn Stonehenge road tunnel, despite watchdog MPs' concerns about the viability of the scheme, writes Jordan Marshall. On a contract notice for the main contractor job, which was published this week, Highways England has said the contract will be worth £1.25bn to the winning team. The government's roads agency is looking to draw up a shortlist of three firms or joint ventures to carry out the job, which it says will run for up to 13 years given the contract will include up to seven years of maintenance work. The successful bidder will also be responsible for the design and construction of the new infrastructure, the refurbishment, replacement and modification of existing assets and maintenanceand operation during construction.
