Under increasing competitive pressures, and spurred by recently introduced energy policies and mandates, businesses are becoming increasingly aware of the need for, and advantages of, proactively managing the energy they consume. Industrial plants, commercial facilities, universities and government institutions are looking for ways to lower energy costs. For some operations, the quality and reliability of power is also critical, as it can negatively affect sensitive computer or automation equipment, product quality or research results, provision of 24/7 service and, ultimately, revenues. In response, facility management and engineering groups have been tasked with finding the latest available technology capable of delivering and managing the energy commodities that have such a significant effect on their bottom line. A number of options have emerged in recent years, the most comprehensive of which are enterprise energy management (EEM) systems.
