Q: Please tell us briefly the history of Hong Kong Housing Authority (HA) A: Established in 1973, HA is a statutory organisation tasked to develop and implement a public housing programme to help the government achieve its policy objective on public housing. At present, there are more than 2 million people, approximately 30% of the population, living in public housing. With another 16% living in subsidized housing, a total of 46% of the local population is living in residential units built by HA. Hong Kong is probably the leader in the development of public rental housing in the world. In Singapore, the situation is a bit different, about 80% of the entire population lives in public housing units purchased from the government.
