RIBA denies claims of Stirling favouritism

The RIBA has been forced to deny that the appointment of Stephen Bates to its Stirling Prize judging panel will hand victory to his mentor Tony Fretton at this year's event. Fretton's Fuglsang Art Museum is the bookies' favourite to win the award, which will be announced on October 17 and broadcast live on Channel 4. But the decision to appoint Bates, co-founder of Sergison Bates, as well as John Tuomey of O'Donnell & Tuomey as chairman, has led to fears the five-strong jury will be too "sympathetic" to Fretton's entry.
