Now is the Winter of our discontent made glorious summer by "silly moderns". I was fascinated by John Winter's Life Class in last week's BD. This fine modern architect with his love of Mies and Lou Kahn had a pop at "the baroque, the rococo, Gehry, Koolhaas and the other silly moderns". This coffee-house squib reminds me more than a little of the way the young Palladians had a go at the baroque exactly three centuries ago. The Palladians, one could argue were the clean-lined "moderns" of their age, while the baroque belonged to old decadents like, erm, Christopher Wren along with Hawksmoor, Van-brugh and Borromini - can't trust a foreign chappie who does curves instead of straight lines.
