Green Roofs: Back to the Basics

"When I tell people I'm doing a green roof, most people think I'm doing a grass roof, like I'm putting turf up there," says Bradley Rowe, PhD, an associate professor in the Department of Agriculture at Michigan State University, East Lansing. "Green roofs aren't like that." What constitutes a green roof is a question that remains somewhat unresolved, even for those who consider themselves green roof advocates. When Rowe and other green roof gurus spoke at the Green Rooftops for Sustainable Communities Conference in May, attendees eagerly raised their hands during Q&A segments and then almost inevitably prefaced their questions with "I'm a total novice, so..." before proceeding to asking something that showed they truly were green roof novices.
