In Minneapolis, the design for a new multipurpose stadium -future home of the NFL's Minnesota Vikings-features a soaring prow, the world's largest glass pivoting doors, and a sloped transparent ethylene tetrafluoroethylene (ETFE) roof, giving fans an open view to the surrounding city without exposure to the elements. Designed by HKS Sports & Entertainment Group, the 65,000-seat Vikings Stadium will be able to host NFL regular-season games, a potential Super Bowl, professional soccer, NCAA basketball, concerts, and conventions. Demolition of the existing Metrodome will begin in early 2014, with the new stadium targeted to open for the Vikings' 2016 season. Mortensen Construction will build the roughly 1.6 million-sf project, which is owned and operated by the Minnesota Sports Facilities Authority.
