Brownfield house building held its own

The first provisional land use change statistics for England in 2008 show a continuing slight improvement in the brownfield home percentage and housing densities, but there are signs that progress on greenfield density, green belt development and flood risk development is stalling.rnThe new figures issued by DCLG show 78% of dwellings (including conversions) were built on previously developed land in 2008 compared to the 2007's 77%. They were built at 46 to the hectare, compared to 44 in 2007, with the brownfield density up from 49 to 51 and greenfield up just one point from 33 to 34.rnThe provisional headline figures for 2008 were supported by firmer statistics for 2007 than previously issued in a number of areas, including regional brownfield percentages and densities. Also confirmed for 2007 was the statistic that 2% of dwellings were built in designated green belts, unchanged since 2004 and 9% were built in areas of high flood risk, the same as in 2006.
