Happy New Year! I would like to express my appreciation for your advices and guidance during my first year as Director-General. Thanks to you all, STRL was able to reach the 75th anniversary of its founding. This year is also the 80th anniversary of radio broadcasting in Japan, a milestone for broadcasting. During the past three quarters of a century, many of the research projects that our laboratories have undertaken, including satellite broadcasting, Hi-Vision (HDTV), digital broadcasting, and flat display devices, have heralded new eras in broadcasting. After having reached this milestone, we must clarify our research policies on the kind of broadcasting system that should be worked toward. At present, STRL staff and NHK employees in related departments are in the middle of discussions on STRL's vision of future broadcasting, and we hope to present the STRL Vision document to the public at the annual STRL Open House in May.
