Public Sector Broadcasting Research in Europe and the Possibilities for Research Collaborations between NHK and the BBC

Broadcasting has gone through a period of intense change, from the one-way communication of a broadcasting station to viewers, to interactive communications. For example, when a news-worthy incident occurs, the BBC receives several thousand pieces of video or still pictures on the incident from people. One significant news item recently prompted people to send us 6,000 images via email. Some of the images from such sources were used in TV broadcasts, and some were used for our Internet service. Our viewers want such interactivity, and this is something that broadcasters must understand. We need to provide technology that enables interactive communication with viewers.
