We are developing a new microphone system with sharp directivity, and NHK recently employed it in its relay broadcast of the "Lake Biwa Marathon," held in March (Pictures 1 and 2). The system was installed on a motorcycle used to shoot images of the lead runners, as well as in the outside broadcasting (OB) van. It captured the sounds of foot falls and breathing of the runners, a feat which has been difficult to do using conventional microphones because of noise from the engines of the bike and OB van. The distinguishing feature of this microphone is low sensitivity to sound arriving from the rear. This enables it to clearly pick up objective sounds located in front of the device even when a running engine is right behind it.
