The voice over frame relay (VoFR) market is projected to skyrocket. It is estimated that by 1999 more than one million public frame relay ports will be installed worldwide. In a 1996 survey of 400 frame relay users by the research firm Vertical Systems Group, 24 percent considered voice over frame relay very important, an increase from 6 percent in 1994. "It's a hard business to beat," agrees John Coons, principal analyst for wide-area networking at Dataquest. "The selling point is the company already has frame relay." This remains the major benefit because VoFR is only cost-effective when a company already uses a frame relay network and simply runs its calls on the same bandwidth. The average call on VoFR costs less than one cent a minute, compared with the average cost of 10 cents a minute with the traditional telephone system.
