All the talk about satellite radio has to date revolved around U.S. operators XM and Sirius, but WorldSpace is now on the dial thanks to moves in Italy that will see the company launch Europe's first bird-based radio service. WorldSpace Italia - a joint venture of Workspace's Vi-atis Satellite Radio European holding company and Italy's New Satellite Radio — received approval from the Italian Ministry of Communications earlier this month to provide a subscription-based offering comprising 50 channels of sports, talk and advertising-free music. WorldSpace plans to light services, delivering to portable and vehicle-based devices, in 2007.
