"I first saw the thermographic camera when I was studying remote sensing at Keio University in Japan," says Kenji Hirasawa. "My tutor had one in his office and I asked to borrow it and looked at my friends through its lens. Only people are shown in red, the background is shown in blue, and life - aliveness - seemed so beautiful. I was instantly fascinated and felt its potential as my art form. I have been taking portraits of my people with the camera since 2004." Hirasawa moved to London to study Image Production Photography at the London College of Communications in 2008, but continued his exploration of thermal photography and the colour of life. He thought about photographing dead people to expand the project but, realising he wasn't ready, hit on the idea of photographing waxworks, in particular the waxworks at Madam Tussauds - partly in tribute to Hiroshi Sugimoto's series on the attraction, but also because he found it so fascinating.
