Shehata and Medra have reported a modified technique for simultaneous maxillo-mandibular distraction osteogenesis in hemifacial microsomia and unilateral ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) using an external appliance. This technique differs mainly from the original, described by Ortiz-Monasterio et al., in that a bilateral pterygomaxillary disjunction as well as the separation of the nasal septum to ensure a total release of the maxilla - instead of the simple separation of the pterygomaxillary junction on the affected site - is performed.
