The visual form of a scientific image is no less important than the object it depicts. Hence images in the sciences do not merely mediate - representing scientific results passively - but have their own modes of coining and communicating scientific knowledge. Formal features of scientific images have an independent ability to influence the manner of research, and can easily spark an intellectual fire. These images are therefore not solely 'illustrations' but self-contained epistemological elements of the sciences, which need to be taken extremely seriously in their own right.
