The Craft Bakers' Association (CBA) has definitely engaged in political lobbying during February. Instrumental to this were the negative comments about bread, made by Prime Minister David Cameron, in which he stated that he had given up eating bread in an interview on BBC Radio Sussex. In conjunction with the Federation of Bakers and the British Society of Baking, both associations posted correspondence to the Prime Minister, outlining the positive contribution that bread makes to the nation's diet. This was also echoed by the British Nutrition Foundation, which recently stated: "There is little evidence that cutting bread from your diet would be of a health benefit." We also believe there are too many misconceptions about bread reported in the media. Our letter informed Mr Cameron that craft bakers produce a variety of freshly baked loaves and, at roughly 80 calories per slice, the dietary contribution of bread is often under-appreciated.
