Opinion: voice of the common people

"Daddy's gonna buy you a dream to cling to"... these were the lyrics in John Hurley's 1970s song. Voice of the Common People, re-released later by Paul Young to greater acclaim. However, this voice of the common people is often ignored by politicians, who begin to believe their own press, especially around election time. They appear to forget the still-valid words spoken by Abraham Lincoln at Gettysburg: "…and that government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the earth". But surely good politics are all about working for the common good of the people.
