As I write this on a warm Sunday afternoon in the barley heartland of Suffolk, in eastern England, my whole range of vision from my study window is of beautiful, soft green fields of fully-emerged winter barley and fast-growing spring barley. Three days prior to writing this I returned from a three week overseas trip, so I was surprised to see how the barley crops of England had transformed during my absence. I learned, too, that this is apparent in Scotland and Denmark where, in both cases, the spring sowings were late after rain held up land work.
