The Victorian gold rush which began in 1851 in Ballarat (120 kilometres west of Melbourne) drew thousands to the diggings and saw men amass staggering fortunes that would have seemed unimaginable only a few years before. Countless other prospectors however, picked away at their diggings in vain, never striking that elusive nugget that would make them rich. Joe White Maltings can trace its origins back to this period of Australia's colourful history.
