Daniel Szor admits that he knew nothing at all about distilling or even the drinks industry when he decided to chuck in a 30 year career manipulating other folks' money and do something associated with a long time love of whisky and the Cotswold countryside. Dan is a New Yorker and after graduating went to work in the financial services sector dealing with currency trading for a hedge fund. He did not expect to stay there long as he says there is a limit to the excitement you can get from financial derivative products. He was more interested in sales and business devel- opment, so was directed to open a Paris office, where he spent 11 years, and then a London one in 2006, but finally he decided he did not really like the hectic city life. He and his family had acquired a Cotswold retreat and it had become increasingly difficult to pack up on a Sunday evening and head back to London. He wanted to make and sell something he could be passionate about; something with associated tradition and emotion while making a difference to the local community.
