Ergonomics at a Painful Price

With the changing of the guard in Washington D.C., both the public and private business sectors can expect to see the new administration pass legislation that will hit home. One governmental ruling that could have far-reaching implications on the folding carton and corrugated industries is the Ergonomics Program Standard. Having just gone into effect, the law is already facing heavy resistance from leading manufacturers in the industry. The Ergonomics Program Standard, said to be one of the most sweeping changes in recent years, was officially unveiled when the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) issued its 609-page final ruling on November 14, 2000. A required 60-day waiting period pushed the effective date up to January 16, 2000.
