THE CLASSIC 72 FT KETCH EILEAN boasts a career as dramatic and glamorous as any Hollywood star. Launched in the small village of Fairlie, Scotland, in 1936 for a pair of steel merchants, Eilean already had illustrious DNA (she was built at the famous William Fife & Son shipyard). In 1964 she was bought by Lord Shawcross, lead prosecutor at the Nuremberg trials, and spent summers cruising the Balearics. But it was in Antigua in 1982 that Eilean made her star turn, when the pop group Duran Duran filmed a music video aboard. Rio may have rocketed the British band to the big time, but the yacht fared less well - she collided with a ferry a couple of years later, causing extensive damage. But Eilean would make a spectacular comeback. In 2006 Angelo Bonati, chief executive of Panerai watches, found her and fell in love. He restored the yacht back in Viareggio, Italy, according to specifications found in the archives of the Scottish Maritime Museum. Returned to her classic beauty, Eilean was reunited with Duran Duran at the Antigua Classic Yacht Regatta in 2012, where singer Simon Le Bon took the helm once again.
