Christian Boltanski: Faire Son Temps (Life in the Making)

Christian Boltanski's exhibition begins with a work in blue light bulbs reading 'Depart' (Departure) and ends with one in red light bulbs reading 'Arrivee' (Arrival). A metaphor for the journey of life, the haunting scenography assembles works alluding to memory, myths, absence, childhood and autobiography that confirm Boltanski's stature as one of France's leading artists on the international stage. It opens with a film, L'Homme qui tousse (The Coughing Man, 1969), of a man spitting paint, struggling to breathe, next to one of Boltanski's few remaining paintings — La Chambre ovale (The Oval Room) - from 1967. The juxtaposition refers to his decision in the late Sixties to stop painting and turn to sculpture, photograph-based works, installations and videos.
