Eric Kellerman describes the nudes in his current series of figurative studies as, "portable landscapes," using light and shadow as key elements in tracking the sensuous terrain of the female form. "The work might be seen as an extension of my early attempts at photographing English parks and gardens," says the English-born photographer, who has lived in the Netherlands for the past 34 years. "The photographs in this series express my ongoing concern with chiaroscuro and the female body, with the light stripes suggesting anatomical continuities that don't really exist. In the studio I determine the 'time of day,' which pretty much could be interpreted as dawn or sunset. My lighting is generally very simple, with lots of indirect sources. I like to backlight, since it increases the sense of three-dimensionality."
