Women of Clay is Marcela Taboada's intimate and moving photographic study of a remarkable group of women who struggled to rebuild their lives and community in the aftermath of severe economic and social hardships. Taken between 1999 and 2001 in the Indian village of San Miguel Amatitlan in the Sierra Madre Mountains of Oaxaca, Mexico, Taboada documented a situation typical of many small villages and towns in Mexico-a majority of the men have been forced to leave their villages to try to earn a living in the U.S, leaving behind their grandparents, parents, wives, and children.
