When he enlisted to serve in Vietnam in 1968, Hamilton had every expectation of going off to fight, but it was an unexpected, life-altering detour that took Drayton Hamilton away from the war in Vietnam to a border town between South and North Korea. It was while serving as a Tactical Operations Center clerk with the U.S. Army Second Division Headquarters Co. at a base at Munsan near Panmunjom and the border of North Korea, that Hamilton first came to appreciate Korean culture, while simultaneously developing an interest in photography.
