To spend time with Shelby Lee Adams is to be caught between two worlds, trying to find a foothold in a weirdly shifting landscape. It is sitting on the porch of Lloyd Noble's trailer in Lost Creek holler outside of Hazard, Kentucky, listening to roosters crow while talking about the muse-ums of Europe. It is standing next to Adams at a party outside of Viper, Kentucky while he chats with his friends who all have his pho-tographs of them on the walls of their trailers, then listening in while he takes a call from his dealer in LA to discuss a sale to Elton John or Sheryl Crow. It is standing in the stifling 100° heat of a Kentucky summer, talking about his special recipe for a hot toddy- dark tea, sassafras, sorghum, moonshine, bourbon, black pepper-that he makes in the dead of winter in Massachusetts. And Adams has kept a steady foot in these different worlds for at least 35 years.
