In Vasterbotten municipality, between Sorsele and Storuman, Scan-Mining has shown the presence of two open-cast ore deposits with zinc, gold, lead and silver ore. The finds are located in the Sorsele field, which consists of an approximately 50 kilometre long and 5 kilometre wide area of sedimentary and vulcanic supracrustal rocks, surrounded by granitoid rocks. ScanMining has shown four principal mineralised zones in the Sorsele field. Of these, the two currently most important are the Ersmarksber-get zone and the Svarttrask zone, where the ore deposits - known as Blaiken - are situated. The Blaiken mine is the name given to the ore dressing plant with its associated ores, now being planned at the Storjuktan water reservoir. Production will take place in the mine in Blaiken, and the goal is for production to commence in the early summer months of 2006. Blaiken's capacity will be three times larger than that of Pahtavaara, ScanMinings goldmine in northern Finland, making it one of Sweden's largest mines.
