LOTUS ADDS LIGHTNESS...IN A BAD WAY

Long the masters of paring back cars to their barest bones, Lotus's workforce seems sadly set to suffer similar treatment. The Hethel firm has announced it will shed a guarter of its staff, some 325 jobs, in a new round of cost-cutting measures. The exact redundancies are still under negotiation, so we don't know what parts of the company will be most slimmed down. Oddly, sales of the Elise, Exige and Evora are up overall by nearly half this year over last. Clearly, then, the company can't make money just building its lightweight sports cars. New CEO Jean-Marc Gales (a former PSA big hitter) acknowledges the company will have to go beyond its current range with new types of car.
