WHY MUST DRIVERS PAY SO MUCH TO GO GREEN?

It's fairly well-known that I am more nervous about the future of this fragile planet than is my colleague Mr Clarkson. But I share with him one conviction. If our collective future is to be lengthy, we will have engineers and technologists to thank. Whenever car-company bosses moan to me that the next round of emission and consumption legislation will be impossible to meet, or that it'll force us into tiny and slow cars that no-one wants or can afford, I argue that their engineers are far too brilliant to let it happen.
