For many, the concept of digital currency was abstract and confusing. Putting faith in something that is intangible, not backed by a government or by a precious metal, was a tall order. Yet, the rapid adoption of smartphones and tablets, the rapid transformation of cross-border banking, and the advent of noncard, realtime payments has made digital payments commonplace. People around the globe routinely use noncash, digital payments to transact business, buy their cup of coffee or restock their pantry. The global growth of noncash payments volume reached $389 billion transactions in 2014, with the United States as a top-ten market for these noncash payments.
