When it comes to leading the capital markets into frontier economies, there is no such thing as plain vanilla, says Helmut Engel-brecht, head of African investment banking at Standard Bank. A $1.6bn power station in Botswana and $330m mining project in Malawi typify the bank's ability to structure deals in a way that finds answers to the distinctive questions that such markets pose, often without the benefit of credit ratings or research coverage by the bulge bracket global banks.
