SEC takes on HFT tactics

The US Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating a number of high-frequency trading (HFT) firms, according to Reuters. Although there are no allegations of wrongdoing at the firms, the SEC is said to be investing HFT strategies and is looking at some of the largest firms in the US. The action comes as a number of other agencies - the US Commodities Futures Trading Commission, the US Department of Justice, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the New York attorney general- investigate HFT, looking into abusive strategies. One such strategy is 'spoofing', where traders put out false orders and cancel before execution to give the impression of an intention to buy or sell, and thus changing the price.
