Banking is a competitive industry, but banks will often cast aside their differences and co-operate with each other rather than compete. There are many examples of this, and they fall into two categories: collaboration, and partnership. Collaboration is where many banks work together on a multi-lateral basis to deal with shared industry-wide issues. Partnership is a specific type of collaboration where two banks work on a bi-lateral basis to further their own business interests to the benefit of both organisations. So when do banks decide to stop competing and start co-operating? Mr Satvin-der Singh, global head of trust & securities services and cash management for financial institutions at the global transaction banking division of Deutsche Bank, is a long-time observer of this business trend and sheds some light on it.
