Along with many other countries, Kazakhstan was hit by the global financial crisis, and developments in the Kazakh banking industry are still subject to its consequences. "In recent years, the banking landscape in Kazakhstan has changed dramatically. It has become less concentrated, as the top three banks' market shares by assets was down to 40% from 59% at end of 2007. Mid-size banks, showing better loan quality, have become the main asset growth drivers. Banks with foreign ownership, mainly subsidiaries of the largest Russian banks, have also become active in gaining market share," says Mr Dauren Zhaksybek, chief executive officer at Tsesnabank, who has led the bank since 2006 to become one of the top banking names in Kazakhstan.
