SUBMARINE UPHOLDER

This is the story of both a submarine and her commander. The submarine was 'HMS Upholder' and her captain Lieutenant Commander Malcolm David Wanklyn V.C, D.S.O (two bars) who was widely regarded as Britain's most effective ever submarine commander. It is, unfortunately, a comparatively short story. The 'Upholder' was ordered in September 1939 and disappeared with all hands in April 1942. In between she sank two enemy destroyers, three submarines and numerous other vessels totalling 128,000 tonnes. It is a great story of wartime operations in the Mediterranean based in Malta. It is one of almost constant action, great skill and bravery.
