New pulp mill in Uruguay will require deepwater port

Stora Enso and Arauco are joining forces in a 50/50 joint venture to build and operate a new state-of-the-art pulp mill in Montes del Plata, Uruguay, with an expected completion date in early 2013. Thanks to optimal weather conditions and fast-growing trees, South American eucalyptus plantations have geographic and horticultural advantages that allow South American producers to be at the low end of the cost curve. The Montes del Plata JV will also include a deepwater port to minimise transportation costs and will have a newly built power plant based on renewable resources in order to keep energy costs under control.
