Another in Professor/Rear Admiral Morison's fabulous 14 volume history that has been far-sightedly reproduced as a paperback by The Naval Institute Press. This volume, of course, covers the later part of the New Guinea campaign which actually commenced early in 1942 with the Japanese occupation of New Britain and New Ireland. Once, as we have seen, the Allies broke the Bismarcks Barrier, there was an urgent need to clear out the threatening remnants of the Japanese forces from New Guinea and the Marianas to move north within striking distance of the Japanese homeland. The non-threatening forces were essentially left to wither on the vine without any logistical support.
