It took more than half a century for the　United States government to establish an academy or college for aspiring naval officers. That was 43 years more than it took to establish its army counterpart at West Point.　This very detailed book describes the inspiration for the Academy going back to the War of Independence and the exploits of heroes like John Paul Jones. It then describes the frustrating glacial progress over some 55 years of interminable philosophical, economic and financial debate until the Academy was established at Annapolis.
