Like most major canal developments, the Saint Lawrence Seaway was a long time coming. Indeed, it involved nearly four centuries of dreams, agitation and preparation. Your reviewer spent much of his childhood avoiding lectures on this new "wonder of the world" from his Canadaphile parents who seemed obsessed with the development of the Seaway in the late fifties. Allowing for that prejudice, though, he is impressed with the Seaway and needs no reminding of its enormous contribution to the seaborne commerce of the north American mid-west.
