The Harvard Blackstone Buildings: A Model of Green Excellence

As a part of its ongoing mission to be a leader in environmental sustainability, Harvard University recently gave three of its buildings a full body, environmentally friendly makeover.The 40,000 square foot space has been renovated from a set of 19th century masonry buildings into buildings that have earned the highest ranking of green excellence available. Blackstone Station was first built in 1888 to serve as a coal-fired electricity plant for the growing number of street lamps in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Since 1930, the plant has been providing heat to much of Harvard's campus through a system of steam tunnels. In 2003, University Operations Services (UOS) decided to refurbish the steam plant and adjacent buildings into a unified and sustainable office space.
