NIH Director's ARRA-Funded Pathfinder Award Promotes Diversity in the Scientific Workforce

Although the scientific community has yet to fully solve the problem of workforce diversity, it remains committed to doing so. A portion of the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act of 2009 (ARRA) funded the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's Pathfinder Award to Promote Diversity in the Scientific Workforce, an award designed to cultivate new ideas and promote the development of novel solutions for scientific workforce diversity. This award was open to all undergraduate and graduate students, postdoctoral researchers, and faculty in any biological, behavioral, clinical, social, physical, chemical, computational, engineering, and mathematical disciplines with the potential to improve public health. The diversity issues addressed in each grant could include the following underrepre-sented groups: underrepresented racial and ethnic groups; individuals with disabilities; individuals from socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged backgrounds that have inhibited their ability to pursue a career in health-related research; and women at the faculty level (1).
