Today's Arctic is a polar desert characterized by a cold, dry climate and an extreme photoperiod marked by continuous daylight in summer, intervals of twilight in spring and fall, and a long winter night that lasts from a day at the Arctic Circle to six months at the North Pole. About a dozen terrestrial mammal species, including caribou, Arctic hare, and muskoxen, call the Arctic's treeless tundra home, and these mammals are adapted in numerous ways to the short growing season, drought, and months of continuous cold winter night (Pielou, 1994).
