Deciphering Data Link Applications

Data link, While not new, is becoming more and more important these days, as voice communication between pilots and air traffic controllers encounters an ever-growing crunch in terms of frequency availability. But there exists more than one data link; tossed about are terms like VDL Mode 1, Mode 2, Mode 3 or Mode 4, as well as ADS-B, TIS, UAT, Mode-S and the proposed integrated internetwork that provides routing of the data link messages: the Aeronautical Telecommunication Network (ATN).
