The original flight was the ultimate in ETOPS, made long before regulators defined what constitutes acceptable risk when crossing open water. The attempt will be every bit the challenge in extended twin operations for pilot Steve Fossett and navigator Mark Rebholz when they lift off from St. John's, Newfoundland, early next month for Clif-den, Ireland. They are recreating one of aviation's most famous flights, the first nonstop Atlantic crossing on June 14-15, 1919, by Royal Flying Corps pilot Capt. John Alcock and navigator Lt. Arthur Whitten Brown in a Vickers Vimy.
