Airbus Introduces HUD Symbology on Primary Flight Display

Airbus is introducing "harmonized" symbology on primary flight displays (PFD) that center on a flightpath vector. For the first time, it is offering an energy cue as well and is encouraging airlines to use both. Starting with the A350-1000, each aircraft will have the capability, although use of it, for now, will be at the discretion of the flight crew. The move underscores the difficulty of imposing nonmandatory safety improvements on scores of pilots whose working methods may be deeply ingrained.Perhaps the best-kept secret about Airbus flight decks has been the capability to switch to a flightpath vector. This symbol represents the flightpath angle and the aircraft's track, showing where the aircraft is actually going. It can arguably be seen as an improvement over the conventional pitch attitude and heading indications to which the vector symbol is supplemental. As a primary indication on the PFD, it has been an option for crew since the A310.
