This is not your parents' Falklands war. With the 30th anniversary of the start of their short war between Argentina and the U.K. next month, and tempers flaring again between Buenos Aires and London, it seems little has changed over this South American archipelago. The countries continue to exchange diplomatic salvos over possible oil and mineral reserves near the islands, as well as valuable fishing stocks nearby. And the arrival of the Duke of Cambridge in his role as a Royal Air Force (RAF) search-and-rescue pilot recently, and deployment orders for an advanced Royal Navy destroyer serve as reminders of just how easily this self-governing British territory of 3,140 people still commands major military force posturing.
