All this, however, only comes into play if the industry failed to identify the problem earlier in the chain. In airports, simplified travel procedures, clear signage, sufficient seating, clean restrooms and designated places for smokers all have a role to play. Yet it is a "people problem" and, as such, we need to sensitise all airport personnel to the scale of the problem and harness their input in an attempt to solve it on a case by case basis. Awareness training programmes should be given to everybody from the check-in agent to the airport bar tender. Zero tolerance policies must be communicated to passengers through educational materials and advertising campaigns in the form of posters in terminals, announcements broadcast in lounges and articles in flight magazines, all explaining the consequences of disruptive behaviour and acts of interference with crew-members.
