9-11 DECEMBER: BAGHDAD, IRAQ Rockets were fired at Baghdad International Airport on 8 December and at least two rockets were fired at the airport on the 11 December. Reportedly, there were no casualties or significant damage to the airport. On 9 December, six Iraqi security force members were injured in a rocket attack at an army base near Baghdad International Airport. Amongst other attacks in Iraq, 15 rockets were fired at Qayyarah Airfield, where US forces are based, on 11 December. 11 DECEMBER: BAGRAM, AFGHANISTAN A vehicle-borne improvised explosive device was set off outside a medical facility near the Bagram Airfield US military base. The attackers then entered the facility and engaged in a shootout with local forces which lasted until the evening, when all six attackers were killed. Reports state that at least two Afghan civilians were killed and 73 injured. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. 20 DECEMBER: PUNCAK, INDONESIA A small aircraft was shot at by separatists in Papua whilst it was landing at Beoga Airport from Timika. The pilots were unaware of the attack until passengers on the aircraft notified them. The gunmen then fired at workers who were unloading cargo from the aircraft. There were no reported casualties. 28 DECEMBER: MADANG, PAPUA NEW GUINEA Approximately 20 young men conducted an armed robbery at Madang Airport. The group started off by cutting down a coconut tree by a road leading to the airport. They travelled by foot to the offices of the Heli Niugini Company, tied up the security guards at the office and stole goods. A security guard from a neighbouring building informed the police, who attempted to get to the scene in their vehicles but were blocked by the tree. The police travelled by foot and confronted the thieves and a shootout ensued, which resulted in the death of one of the robbers, Ethan Andrews, 22, and the severe injuries of two others - Joannes, 24, and Jason Kake, 19. The other members of the group fled the scene with the stolen goods.
